Kristen Sandel, MD
Emergency Medicine Clerkship Director

Dr. Kristen Sandel is a graduate of Bucknell University and the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. Following her graduation from medical school, she completed her residency in emergency medicine at Drexel University, formerly know as MCP-Hahnemann. Dr. Sandel is board certified in emergency medicine and has been The Reading Hospital and Medical Center emergency medicine clerkship director and resident coordinator since 2007. She is an associate clinical professor for both The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine as well as Drexel University. Dr. Sandel is also on the executive boards of the Berks County Medical Society and the Young Physician Section of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

Family Medicine

D. Michael Baxter, MD
Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine Dr. Michael Baxter is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio and Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine Residency training at St. Margaret’s Memorial Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Following residency, he served three years with the United States Public Health Service at the Keam’s Canyon Indian Hospital in Arizona. In addition to serving as Deputy Director of the Temple University Family Medicine Residency Program, he designed and directed a second-year level course for medical students emphasizing primary clinical skills and principles of public health. He completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at Temple University, and joined The Reading Hospital and Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program in 1990, serving as Director for 20 years. In addition to his responsibilities as Department Chair, Dr. Baxter teaches residents and medical students in the in-patient and ambulatory settings. Dr. Baxter’s professional interests include public health, preventive healthcare, and geriatrics. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Family Physicians, he has a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Baxter currently serves as President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and recently served as President of the Berks County Medical Society.

Lee Radosh, MD
Director, Family Medicine Residency Program Dr. Lee Radosh is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine Residency training at Lancaster General Hospital. He then joined the faculty of The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, and completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University in 2001. He became the Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program in 2006 and became the Program Director in 2011. In addition to managing and overseeing the residency program and the residency clinical sites, Dr. Radosh teaches residents and medical students in both the hospital and family medicine center. Dr. Radosh’s interests include quality improvement, medical informatics, research, and practice management. He is the family medicine center site leader for the IPIP-sponsored Governor’s Office of Healthcare Reform Chronic Care Initiative. Dr. Radosh is also the host of the local cable television show, "Medicine in the News." Dr. Radosh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University school of Medicine, a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine, and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family, Community, and Preventive Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. He is married to Jodi Radosh, PhD, a professor at Alvernia University, and the father of two little girls. He is on the board of Berks Community Television, a local non-profit that produces hundreds of local, live call-in programs every month, and coaches Little League girls’ soccer.

Deborah Bevvino, CRNP, PhD
Faculty Associate, Behavioral Medicine Dr. Deborah Bevvino received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Western Connecticut University and a Master’s in Nursing Science from the University of Arkansas. She has held clinical nursing positions serving as nurse manager in coronary critical care and has practiced as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in primary care. Dr. Bevvino has held full time faculty positions at both Hahnemann University and Albright College and served as Chairperson of the Albright Nursing Department for three years. Following a pre-doctoral clinical psychology internship at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, Dr. Bevvino received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Lehigh University. Dr. Bevvino oversees the Behavioral Medicine curriculum and education for the Family Medicine Residency program. She is also a licensed psychologist and has a psychotherapy practice at The Reading Hospital Center for Mental Health. Dr. Bevvino is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. Her professional interests include: attachment theory in medical education, adult mental health, and Ayur-Veda Medicine, addictions, and women’s health.

Mary K. Brigandi, DO
Faculty Associate, Osteopathic Medicine Dr. Mary Brigandi received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the State University of New York at Brockport and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, before attending Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her osteopathic rotating internship in the Crozier Keystone Health System and then completed her Family Medicine Residency training at Montgomery Hospital. Prior to coming to The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in 2004, Dr. Brigandi served as a faculty member at Montgomery Hospital Family Medicine Residency. She coordinates the osteopathic curriculum and education for the family medicine osteopathic residents. She works with all residents and medical students in the inpatient and ambulatory settings. Dr. Brigandi’s professional interests include osteopathic manipulative therapy, CAM, acupuncture, women's health, and preventive medicine. Dr. Brigandi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine.

Nipa Doshi, MD
Faculty Associate, Curriculum Dr. Nipa Doshi is a graduate of Loyola College and Hahnemann University School of Medicine. She completed her Family Medicine Residency training at Lancaster General Hospital. Following completion of a Faculty Development Fellowship at Lancaster General Hospital, she joined the Family Medicine Residency Program at Drexel University’s Warminster Hospital serving as Associate Program Director and then Interim Program Director. Dr. Doshi joined The Reading Hospital and Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program in 2007. She coordinates the PGY-1, PGY-2, and PGY-3 curriculum, in addition to teaching residents and medical students in the in-patient and ambulatory settings. Dr. Doshi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. She is also the Medical Director the Western Berks Free Medical Clinic.

Cory Keller, DO
Faculty, Primary Care Sports Medicine Dr. Cory Keller attended Beaver College as an undergraduate student and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine as a medical student. After finishing his Family Medicine Residency training at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, he completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Keller provides lectures and workshops to the Family Medicine residents. He supervises residents on their Sports Medicine rotations and at a variety of community sporting events.

Louis Mancano, MD
Medical Director, Ambulatory Services Dr. Louis Mancano completed his undergraduate education at St. Joseph’s University and his medical education at Temple University School of Medicine. Following completion of his family medicine residency training at Montgomery Hospital Medical Center, Dr. Mancano worked in a semi-rural private group family practice for five years. He then joined the faculty of the Montgomery Family Medicine Residency Program, and, after completing the American Academy of Family Physicians Program Director fellowship, he served as their Residency Program Director. He joined The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in 2001 as Associate Director, and after obtaining a Masters of Business Administration, he was appointed Medical Director of Ambulatory Services. Dr. Mancano continues to be very active with the residency, teaching residents ambulatory care with a special interest in dermatology, office procedures, and practice management. Dr. Mancano is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.

Nabil Muallem, MD
Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Nabil Muallem attended Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales for his undergraduate education and the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines for his medical school education. He completed his OB/GYN residency training at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center and has been in private practice since 1987. Dr. Muallem works closely with the family medicine residents helping to teach the OB/GYN portions of the curriculum with regard to didactics as well as clinical supervision.

Thomas Raff, MD
Faculty Associate, Obstetrics Dr. Tom Raff completed his undergraduate studies at Houghton College in New York. A recipient of the Jenner Award for International Study from the Medical College of Virginia, he spent the first two years of medical school studying at St. Andrews University in Scotland before returning to complete his degree at the Medical College of Virginia. He holds medical degrees at both universities. Family Medicine Residency training was done at the Lancaster General Hospital, where he developed an interest in women’s health. He included this as a major focus of his seven years of private practice experience in the Lancaster area. Since joining The Reading Hospital and Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program in 1999, his primary role has been overseeing the Maternal Health curriculum, as well as teaching residents and medical students in both the ambulatory and inpatient arena. Dr. Raff holds appointments as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Jefferson Medical College as well as Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Penn State College of Medicine. His research experience has been in leading the residency’s involvement in the IMPLICIT network, a CQI initiative focused on Maternal Health outcomes in 12 residencies in the mid-Atlantic region. His other interests include ethics in medicine and extensive urgent care experiences.

Jane Weida, MD
Family Medicine Clerkship Director, Faculty Associate Dr. Jane Weida completed her undergraduate education at Ursinus College and received a Master’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. After graduating from Jefferson Medical College, she completed her Family Medicine Residency training at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Dr. Weida spent 13 years in private practice in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, followed by 6 years in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. She joined The Reading Hospital and Medical Center Residency Program in 2009. In addition to teaching residents and medical students in the in-patient and ambulatory settings, Dr. Weida serves as the medical student Clerkship Director. Dr. Weida’s professional interests include global health, pediatric obesity, child abuse, and osteoporosis. She has traveled overseas many times to help deliver medical supplies and family medicine training to patients and physicians in former Soviet republics in Asia. Dr. Weida is the Treasurer of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. She is a Past President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians and currently serves as an Alternate Delegate from Pennsylvania to the Congress of Delegates of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Weida is a Clinical Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine.

Internal Medicine

Richard Alweis, MD , FACP
Program Director, Categorical Medicine

Dr. Alweis is a graduate of Brown University and the Warren Alper School of Medicine at Brown University. He completed his residency and then chief residency at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Prior to joining the faculty at Reading Hospital in 2008, he served as the Associate Program Director of the internal medicine residency training program at Mount Auburn Hospital from 2003-2007, and also completed a fellowship in medical education at Mount Auburn Hospital in 2007. His current professional interests include chronic pain management, adaptation of the chronic care model for a resident clinic setting, creating medical homes within existing practices in the hospital system, and analysis of data quality in electronic medical records. He precepts residents and medical students in the resident clinic and faculty practice, and is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College

Anthony A. Donato, Jr., MD, FACP
Associate Program Director, Inpatient Medicine

Dr. Donato completed his undergraduate work at Georgetown University and Medical School at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine on a scholarship program with the United States Air Force. Following completion of an Air Force Internal Medicine residency and teaching military residents and students as a clerkship director for Uniformed Services University, he joined the Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Faculty in 2001. He continued his pursuit of improving his teaching skills with his completion of a General Internal Medicine Fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005 , and is starting a Masters of Health Professions Education program through the University of Illinois at Chicago this summer. His professional interests involve improving direct observation techniques and deepening apprenticeship models of resident development through innovative educational techniques. He currently serves as associate program director of internal medicine, teaches residents on the inpatient wards, and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College.

Beverly E. Gabriel, MD, FACP

Following completion of her undergraduate work at Binghamton University, Dr. Gabriel attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at North Shore University Hospital. As faculty in Geriatric Medicine at North Shore University Hospital, Dr. Gabriel served as clerkship director for the Geriatric rotation. She joined The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in 2007. Dr. Gabriel's current professional interests include end of life care in the elderly and wound care. She currently oversees residents in the Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and OB/GYN programs during their geriatric rotation.

David L. George, MD, FACP, MBA
Vice President, Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer
Associate Chair, Department of Medicine

Dr. David George is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He completed training in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, as well as a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina. Dr. George's current professional interests include education in behavioral change, skin manifestations of rheumatic disease, and immune mediated hearing disorders. He serves as Vice President, Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at The Reading Hospital and Assistant Dean and Clinical Associate Professor Jefferson Medical College. He is an educator in rheumatology and acute ambulatory medicine. Dr. George also oversees training in quality improvement and patient safety.

Ronald Herb, DO
Clinical Director of Osteopathic Internal Medicine Residency Program

Dr. Ron Herb is a graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Reading Hospital Internal Medicine residency program. Dr. Herb is a diplomat in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and serves as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He currently has a private practice and is a mentor to medical residents, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. He has been recognized by the residents for excellence in teaching. Dr. Herb serves on the Peer Review committee and is involved in pilot studies for chronic illness.

Neha Majmudar, MD

Dr. Neha Majmudar is a graduate of George Washington University Medical School and Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Previously, Dr. Majmudar worked at the VA hospital in East Orange, NJ and was affiliated with UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. Her interests include outpatient medicine with focus on women's health. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College.

Lisa M. Motz, MD, FACP
Student Clerkship Director

Dr. Lisa Motz is a graduate of Moravian College and Temple University School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Resident prior to joining the faculty in 2000. As Clerkship Director, she enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students who rotate through the Department of Medicine and its subspecialties, and working with our affiliated medical schools to improve undergraduate medical education. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Jefferson Medical College, and holds adjunct faculty appointments at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Temple University School of Medicine. She serves as a key academic hospitalist member of our faculty, teaching regularly on the inpatient medicine and consultative services. Special interests include medical ethics and end-of-life care.

Jorge J. Scheirer, MD

Dr. Jorge Scheirer is a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at Keesler Medical Center, Keesler Air Force Base, MS. Dr. Scheirer is the medical director of the internal medicine faculty practice and is a consultant to The Reading Hospital and Medical Center for clinical information technology. His research interests include using information systems to improve health care quality and the impact of computer interfaces on data quality in electronic medical records. Dr. Scheirer is a physician champion for Pennsylvania Improving Performance in Practice and is a leader in three Pennsylvania collaboratives seeking to improve chronic illness care and colorectal cancer screening.

Cecilia Smith, DO, FACP
Chair, Department of Medicine

Dr. Cecilia Smith is a graduate of Villanova University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at The Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital (now Drexel University) and a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Medical Center. Dr. Smith was a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine before joining the Department of Medicine at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in 2004. Dr. Smith is an educator in pulmonary medicine. Dr. Smith's professional interest incudes interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary arterial hypertension. She is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College.

OB/GYN

A. George Neubert, MD
Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Chief, Section of Maternal-Fetal Medicine

A graduate of Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Dr. Neubert completed his undergraduate studies at Gannon University. After completing his residency at The Reading Hospital, Dr. Neubert spent two years at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center as a Clinical Fellow and Instructor in Obstetrics and Gynecology while completing a Fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine. His tenure at The Reading Hospital began in 1995 as Associate Director of the OB/GYN Department and Section Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Neubert also holds a subspecialty certification in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He's a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Society of Perinatal Obstetrics, Philadelphia Obstetrical Society, Philadelphia Perinatal Society, and the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine.

Richard K. DeVeaux, MD
Perinatologist, Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Dr. DeVeaux graduated from Hahnemann Medical College, and completed his residency at Hahnemann University Hospital. He is board certified in both Maternal and Fetal Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. DeVeaux received his fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Gerald W. Ferry, III, MD
Faculty Associate

Dr. Ferry graduated from Temple University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at The Reading Hospital. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Ferry was the 2009 recipient of the APGO (Association of Professor's in Gynecology) Excellence in Teaching Award for his outstanding teaching practices and commitment to teaching excellence.

Sumit Ghosh, MD
Faculty Associate

Dr. Ghosh graduated from Medical College of Pennsylvania - Drexel University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Medical College of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Ghosh was recognized as Resident Educator of the Year and received the Robert W. Leipold Award for Distinguished Teaching at Geisinger Medical Center.

Xuezhi Jiang, MD
Faculty Associate, Clerkship Director

Dr. Jiang completed his graduate studies at the University of Illinois. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2010. In addition to being recognized by the AAGL as an Honorary Resident, Dr. Jiang has received several academic awards. Dr. Jiang has a strong commitment to research as evidenced by his numerous publications, and is eager to continue pursuing his interests in clinical research.

Jaime B. Long, MD
Chief, Section of Urogynecology

Dr. Long graduated from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and completed her residency at The Reading Hospital. She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Long completed her fellowship training in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Mayo Clinic, AZ.

Shahab S. Minassian, MD
Chief, Section of Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility

Dr. Minassian graduated from Jefferson Medical College, and completed his residency at Abington Memorial Hospital. He is board certified in both Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Minassian completed his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship at Jefferson Medical College.

Bernice Robinson-Bennett, MD
Faculty Associate, Section of Gynecologic Oncology

Dr. Robinson-Bennett graduated from UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and completed her residency at The Reading Hospital. Dr. Robinson-Bennett received a Master of Medical Science degree and completed her Gynecologic Oncology fellowship at University of Texas Medical Branch.

Peter F. Schnatz, DO

A graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey, Dr. Schnatz completed his undergraduate studies at Drew University and Post-baccalaureate training at Columbia University. Dr. Schnatz completed his Internal Medicine and OB/GYN residencies at The University of Connecticut, in Farmington, Connecticut. Certified by both the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Schnatz is also a NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner. He is a 2009 recipient of the APGO Excellence in Teaching Award.

Pediatrics

Karen Eisenhart Wang, MD, FAAP

Staff Pediatrician, Children’s Health Center, The Reading Hospital and Medical Center

Dr. Karen Wang is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University and Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her training in Pediatrics at Tufts University Floating Hospital for Children. Dr. Wang's current professional interests include medical student education, family medicine resident education in pediatrics, continuing medical education, and medical care for underserved populations. She practices general pediatrics full-time. She founded the Reach Out and Read program at Children's Health Center, a national early-childhood literacy program based in primary care offices. She serves on the Continuing Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education and Research Advisory Committees at Reading Hospital.

Transitional Year

Benjamin J. Lloyd, MD
Program Director, Transitional Year

Dr. Ben Lloyd is a graduate of the Hahnemann University School of Medicine and The Reading Hospital's Categorical Medicine Residency. After serving as chief medical resident, he entered private practice for two years before helping form the department's Faculty Practice, integral to teaching primary care skills to residents and medical students. Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Lloyd is clinical associate professor of medicine at Jefferson University Medical College. He is engaged full time as faculty member specializing in inpatient teaching and simulation training.
