Department Overview

The Reading Hospital and Medical Center has had a behavioral health service for over 30 years which now includes an inpatient component (the 40-bed Spruce Pavilion, including adult, geriatric, and adolescent units), the Center for Mental Health, the community-based behavioral health and addictions arm (including two outpatient clinics, an adult and an adolescent partial hospitalization program, a Drug and Alcohol Center, dual disorders and addictions clinics, school-based and college-based mental health programs, and an Assertive Community Treatment team), and the Willows Program (providing nursing home consultation and an interdisciplinary Senior Assessment Program for older adults), hospital behavioral health consultation services and integrative medicine services (with our Cancer Center, our Post-Acute Rehabilitation Hospital, and other medical programs). Over 15,000 patients are served on an annual basis in all these programs.

The Department of Psychiatry/Center for Mental Health includes over 100 mental health professionals from all disciplines including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, psychiatric social workers, counselors, and therapists of different training backgrounds. Many of these are senior in their experience and expertise and have a broad range of expertise with many populations such as the seriously mentally ill, older adults, children and youth, dual disorders, forensic, and culturally diverse populations.

Educational Experiences

The Internship Program offers the following clinical and didactic experiences as an integral part of the training experience:

• Department of Psychiatry professional seminars twice monthly
• Diagnostic interpretation seminar weekly
• Internship training seminar as scheduled
• Countertransference seminar monthly
• Geriatric training seminar monthly
• Medical neuropsychology seminar
• Supervision and consultation seminar 

Annual stipend - $23,664
